About Us

In 2003, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation initiated a fundraising and awareness program, called Diabetes Diplomats, which allowed students to take the search for a cure into their own hands. Spearheaded by Youth Ambassador Lauren Bongiorno, who was 9 years old at the time, the campaign became a tremendous success in Long Island school districts and gradually spread to include students, teachers and family members across the country.

The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation was created in 1971 by a small group of parents of children with diabetes who were committed to finding a cure. Driven by hope and fueled by the need to end their children’s suffering, they banded together to support a promising research program at the University of Miami solely aimed at curing those living with diabetes.

The Diabetes Research Institute has become the world leader it is today through the dedicated efforts and unparalleled perseverance of the people involved with the Foundation. It is the organization of choice for those who are serious, passionate and committed to finding a cure for their loved ones and millions of others with diabetes.

The Diabetes Research Institute is the most comprehensive diabetes research facility of its kind. Pioneering new technologies in islet transplantation and other cellular therapies since the early 1970’s, the DRI has successfully reversed type 1 diabetes in patients participating in ongoing clinical trials. Much of the research now underway is aimed at overcoming the two challenges that remain before this procedure can move toward widespread use in children and adults – eliminating the need for powerful anti-rejection drugs and increasing islet supply.

For the millions of families already affected by diabetes who are looking to the world of science for answers, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure.
