Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Diabetes Diplomats?

Diabetes Diplomats serve as advocates, educators and event fundraisers in their schools and neighborhoods. This volunteer-driven campaign helps to raise much-needed funds for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), and you do not have to have diabetes to participate. You only have to want to make a difference in the lives of those who do!

Kids in grades K-12, plus people of all ages, can become Diabetes Diplomats and help the 21 million Americans who suffer with this disease everyday. It's fun and easy, and you'll be supporting the cure-focused work at the DRI.

How do I become a Diabetes Diplomat?

Signing up is as easy as a mouse click! To complete the online form, first decide what type of fundraising event best fits your personality. If you like to dance, host a "A Dance Away Diabetes@ dance-a-thon." Is exercise your thing? Try organizing a walk-a-thon at your school or in your community. Even if you don't have a hidden talent or special hobby, the list of fundraising activities is practically endless.

Once you decide on the type of project, next you must set a date, gather participants, and determine what equipment or materials you might need. If you need assistance in doing this, we'll be happy to help you get organized.

Will I need permission from anyone to do these projects?

Yes! Most importantly, you will need to get permission from your parent or guardian. Depending upon which project you choose, you might need to get additional authorization, such as from a teacher and/or principal if you conduct a project at your school, or from a store manager if you hold a store front collection, etc. If you are unsure, it is always better to ask.

Do projects count toward community service hours?

Many students are required to commit a certain amount of time toward community service. Organizing a fundraising and awareness project for the DRI is a great way to satisfy these requirements. Please check with an advisor at your school to confirm that the project you select will be accepted for credit.

Are my parents allowed to help me?

Yes! You will be considered the project leader, but you can ask anyone you like to help and participate – friends, siblings, parents, and even grandparents. Together, you will all share a wonderful sense of accomplishment.
